Association football, more commonly known as football or soccer, is a team sport played between two teams of eleven players, and is widely considered to be the most popular sport in the world. It is a football variant played on a rectangular grass or artificial turf field, with a goal at each of the short ends. The object of the game is to score by manoeuvring the ball into the opposing goal. In general play, the goalkeepers are the only players allowed to use their hands or arms to propel the ball; the rest of the team usually use their feet to kick the ball into position, occasionally using their torso or head to intercept a ball in midair. The team that scores the most goals by the end of the match wins. If the score is tied at the end of the game, either a draw is declared or the game goes into extra time and/or a penalty shootout, depending on the format of the competition.

The modern game was codified in England following the formation of The Football Association, whose 1863 Laws of the Game created the foundations for the way the sport is played today. Football is governed internationally by the Fédération Internationale de Football Association (International Federation of Association Football), commonly known by the acronym FIFA. The most prestigious international football competition is the FIFA World Cup, held every four years. This event, the most widely viewed in the world, boasts an audience twice that of the Summer Olympic Games.

Football is played in accordance with a set of rules known as the Laws of the Game. The game is played using a single round ball, known as the football. Two teams of eleven players each compete to get the ball into the other team’s goal (between the posts and under the bar), thereby scoring a goal. The team that has scored more goals at the end of the game is the winner; if both teams have scored an equal number of goals then the game is a draw.

The primary rule is that players (other than goalkeepers) may not deliberately handle the ball with their hands or arms during play (though they do use their hands during a throw-in restart). Although players usually use their feet to move the ball around, they may use any part of their bodies other than their hands or arms.

In typical game play, players attempt to create goal scoring opportunities through individual control of the ball, such as by dribbling, passing the ball to a team-mate, and by taking shots at the goal, which is guarded by the opposing goalkeeper. Opposing players may try to regain control of the ball by intercepting a pass or through tackling the opponent in possession of the ball; however, physical contact between opponents is restricted. Football is generally a free-flowing game, with play stopping only when the ball has left the field of play or when play is stopped by the referee. After a stoppage, play recommences with a specified restart.

At a professional level, most matches produce only a few goals. For example, the 2005–06 season of the English Premier League produced an average of 2.48 goals per match. The Laws of the Game do not specify any player positions other than goalkeeper, but a number of specialised roles have evolved. Broadly, these include three main categories: strikers, or forwards, whose main task is to score goals; defenders, who specialise in preventing their opponents from scoring; and midfielders, who dispossess the opposition and keep possession of the ball in order to pass it to the forwards on their team. Players in these positions are referred to as outfield players, in order to discern them from the single goalkeeper. These positions are further subdivided according to the area of the field in which the player spends most time. For example, there are central defenders, and left and right midfielders. The ten outfield players may be arranged in any combination. The number of players in each position determines the style of the team’s play; more forwards and fewer defenders creates a more aggressive and offensive-minded game, while the reverse creates a slower, more defensive style of play. While players typically spend most of the game in a specific position, there are few restrictions on player movement, and players can switch positions at any time. The layout of a team’s players is known as a formation. Defining the team’s formation and tactics is usually the prerogative of the team’s manager.

Arbitrage is the practice of taking advantage of a difference in price between two or more markets. It is striking a combination of matching deals that capitalise on the imbalance, with the profit being the difference between the two market prices. When related to internet bookmakers, sports arbitrage is where lots of internet bookmakers offer odds on the outcome of the same event.

Any single bookmaker will weight their odds so that no one customer can cover all outcomes at a profit against them. In real terms what this means is that if you use One bookmaker and bet two different bets on the same game you will win, but you won’t make a profit. However, if you look across the board at lots of different betting sites and find the best odds in each direction on that game, it is sometimes possible to place your bets in such a way that with the correct staking a profit is guaranteed whatever the result of the match. When this happens, the book for the person placing the bets is said to be ‘overbroke’ and the bet is known as an arbitrage or a sure win or sure bet.

Finding bets to create an arbitrage isn’t always easy, and sometimes isn’t possible, but with fixed odds sports betting such as football pools it is sometimes possible, but you’ll need to understand a few things like what overround is, and how bookmakers work.

When a bookmaker sets up their bets they do it in such a way that each end of the bet never quite adds up to 100%. This is done in order for them to make a profit. It doesn’t stop people from winning, but it is what stops people from placing both ends of the bet with the one bookmaker and coming out even or in profit. Overbroke is where you effectively beat the odds of overround by placing one end of the bet with one bookmaker and the other end of the bet with a different bookmaker at combined odds which mean that you are guaranteed to make money on the deal.

In actual fact you generally have to place a three part bet with a football match in order to create overbroke as there is the chance of a draw as well as a win or a loss. So you’d be brokering deals with three different bookmakers. The frequency with which the opportunity for arbitrage occurs is fairly low because each individual bookmaker is careful not to go against the overall tide of opinion in how they price a sporting event bet. Having said that, because of the vast number of sport betting events taking place each week, even with only one in a hundred or less bets being capable of overbroke that still means that there are in fact quite a number of sure bets to be found every week.

Fixed Odd bets began in the 19th century when in the 1880’s newspapers started offering fixed prizes to people for correctly predicting the outcome of games. These became known over time as ‘fixed odds’ Basically what this means is that they don’t change. When the odds are publicised they are fixed so that from the moment of publication to the moment they cease to take bets on that game or match, the odds will remain the same. They don’t vary according to how many people bet for or against the various options, they don’t change when a member of the football team is swapped out for someone else, they remain the same regardless of what happens.

Today the process still continues. Bookmakers still offer fixed odds prizes for correct predictions of the score on football matches. When a high street bookmaker publishes a list of the odds on the matches they print a long list and as soon as they print this, the odds become ‘fixed’. Internet bookies have more flexibility with this as they don’t need to print their list, but regardless of this for the most part, the odds on most matches remain the same right up until the match kicks off making them fixed odds.
What this means for any one placing a bet that uses fixed odds is that you know the odds aren’t going to change from when you place the bet. As an example, if you read on the board that the bet is 1/4 then you’d be betting your one coin against four belonging to the bookmaker.

They are setting a probability that they believe there is only 1 chance against 4 that your chosen team will win – this is a ratio of 20% to 80%. So if you bet £1 at these odds, and your team won, you would win £4. If the odds were 4/1 then the bookmaker thinks that there is an 80% chance they’ll win and a 20% chance that they won’t so then you would have to bet £4 in order to win £1. These odds being fixed, this is the amount you would win whether you placed the bet 1 week or 1 minute before the kick off of the match that you are betting on regardless of any new information that came to light such as a player having an injury or something.

Football pools, often referred to by people just as ‘the pools’ are football betting pools based on predicting the outcome of football matches between top level teams that are going to take place in the coming week. Before computers and the internet, you filled out your predictions in a betting shop and then looked in your paper to see the results and find out how well you did. Today, with the internet, there’s no need to visit a betting shop, or ever buy a paper as all the information you need is here at your fingertips online.

If you’ve never played the football pools before then a good site to begin with is footballpools.com where you can choose to play a classic game of football pools.

After you’ve registered on the site, and selected to play ‘classic pools’ choose which game option you want to play – either 10, 11 or 12 fixtures. You are then marked for your top 8 fixtures. (This basically means if you play more fixtures then you’ve got a greater chance of winning). Next, you select the fixtures that you think will end in a score draw by ticking the box next to the fixture you want to choose. Once you’ve got 10, 11 or 12 fixtures chosen, you save your entries. You can choose just to play one competition round, or you can choose to play several in a row using the same fixture details. Once you’ve decided this, you click to ‘play now’ which will confirm your bet and take you to the section where you pay for it.

Scoring is worked out this way… for each fixture you will receive 3 points for a score draw and 2 points for a no score draw, and 1 point for a win regardless of whether it’s home or away.

Each a points score of 21 or more will normally quality for a prize. If you’ve been clever or lucky enough to select 8 high score draws of 2-2 or more, then the £2.5millon jackpot will be paid out.

Obviously these rules apply to this particular website, and other sites who also run football pools may have slightly different ways of doing things, however this guide will still serve you well when you begin playing.

There is a little bit more to playing ‘the pools’ online at different websites these days however. For example with this particular site, if you play regularly you could be in with a chance of winning a prize in their monthly leader board game. This works by every game point you receive on Classic Pools, you get 10 leader board points. If you are one of the top 20 on the leader board at the end of the month, you win a prize.

There are also other games to play on the site, predicting the results of the top 15 fixtures for a chance to win a weekly jackpot, forecasting this weeks premier league clashes, Goal predictor where you predict the score of a particular game, and there’s even a spot the ball competition.
